Spiti is the trip where operator choice matters most, because the two common routes are genuinely different experiences with different risks.
The Shimla circuit enters via Kinnaur, gaining altitude gradually over three or four days. The Manali route crosses Kunzum La and drops you at 3,800 m within a day of leaving. The second is shorter and cheaper. It is also where most altitude sickness on Spiti trips happens.

Shimla circuit vs Manali express
If you have the days, take the Shimla route. Kinnaur is worth seeing in its own right, and the gradual gain means you arrive in Kaza able to enjoy it rather than lying down with a headache.
The Manali route makes sense if you're short on leave, already acclimatised, or have done high altitude before without trouble. Treat the saving as buying a shorter trip, not a cheaper version of the same trip.
Either way, look for an acclimatisation day in Kaza. Itineraries that go straight from arrival to Hikkim at 4,400 m the next morning are asking a lot of your body.
When to go
The Kunzum La pass and the Chandratal road are typically open from roughly June to early October. Outside that window, Spiti is reachable only via the Shimla side, and Chandratal is inaccessible.
September is the sweet spot on most itineraries: the monsoon has passed, the light is exceptional, and the summer crowds have thinned. Departure dates listed here cluster around it for that reason.
